'On one hand, I liked the idea because, when I look back, I never had so much fun making movies. Ever,' he says of his time on the Original Star Wars trilogy. 'But part of me was very terrified.'

'Why go back and take the chance of ruining—or at least tarnishing—people’s memories of it?'

?He said some of the things fans said about the prequel trilogy, starting with 1999's The Phantom Menace (which did not feature Luke, but did feature one Jar Jar Binks) were 'just so over the top.'

'I can see it’s not your favorite movie, but it ruined your childhood? Come on. Let’s put it in perspective,' he said.

He discussed how he only agreed to come back for the new trilogy after Harrison Ford unexpectedly signed on.

'He is so beyond that, and it rubs him the wrong way if people focus too much on Star Wars, because his résumé is so elaborate, and that’s only one part of it. I get it,' he revealed. 'I just didn’t see him wanting to do it.'

He also knew that if both Ford and Carrie Fisher were in and he wasn't, he would be 'the most hated man in fandom.'

'I imagined people circling my house like in the old Frankenstein picture, but with lightsabers instead of torches.'

He joked about the day he and Fisher discovered the Star Wars saga was about to be relaunched with a new trilogy.

'George [Lucas] sat us down very matter-of-factly and told us he was retiring and turning Lucasfilm over to [co-chair] Kathleen Kennedy,' Hamill recalled.?

'He didn’t say Disney was buying it because, you know, insider trading,' he smiled, adding: 'I would have gone out and bought stock that day.'

He said Lucas offered then and there to have their characters written out of the story, if they didn't wish to participate.?

Hamill of course ultimately signed on, and even though he only had one scene at the climax of The Force Awakens, has a much bigger part to play in December's episode VIII The Last Jedi.

In Episode VII, fans learned that Luke went AWOL after his training of nephew Ben Solo went wrong, creating the evil Kylo Ren, mirroring what happened to his father Darth Vader.

'Luke is tortured and burdened by his mistakes,' Hamill revealed of his character. 'He thought he knew who the chosen one was—and he chose wrong. That’s all his responsibility. All the horrible things that are going on, the guilt and the burden, must be so heavy.

'What I’m saying is, Luke is not exactly a barrel of laughs—not that he ever was. But at least in some of the early movies he was having fun.”
