She has been an actress for over two decades, and starred in one of the biggest film franchises of all time - the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

So it is no wonder Liv Tyler was given the opportunity to discuss her lengthy career in a talk at the Oxford Union on Wednesday.

The actress, 40, looked typically stylish in a sleek black co-ord as she shared her biggest life lessons with students - before commemorating the day on Instagram with a cheeky snap in the Union's library.

Liv discussed her lengthy career at the talk - and revealed she had first been inspired to act by her mother, who noticed her 'empathetic' personality early on.

She said: 'My mum was actually the first person to say I was going to be an actress. I think she saw that I've always been very empathetic - I'm like a sponge for people and observing them, and being aware of their emotions.'

Liv shot to fame in Bernardo Bertolucci's Stealing Beauty in 1996, and went on to star in the likes of The Incredible Hulk, Jersey Girl, and of course the famous Lord of the Rings trilogy, as?Arwen Undómiel.?

Looking back at her huge variety of roles, the brunette admitted she tries not to identify personally with her characters.

She explained: 'People always ask which character is the most like you.?I try and tell them that it's like when you fall in love and you're obsessed with someone.

'That's what I do when I have a character. I don't want to distinguish myself because I'm always thinking of my character.?

'I act just because of that connection and total bliss that I get whenever I'm doing what I'm doing. I always feel so blessed that I get to go to work and do the thing that makes me happy.'

Clearly excited after the event, Liv then took to Instagram to share a cheeky snap for her 1.6million followers.

Playfully draping herself across a table in the Union's library with a leather bound book in hand, she wrote: 'Thank you thank you @theoxfordunion for having me !!! What a wonderful evening!'

The actress currently balances her screen projects with her family life, raising her three children.?

Liv shares son Sailor, two-and-a-half, and daughter Lula, 16 months with her fiancé Dave Gardner, as well as son Milo, 11, with her ex-husband Royston Langdon.

Recently speaking to Red magazine, she insisted it was the desire to extend their families that helped strengthen her relationship with her British fiancé.

‘We both wanted to have a family and children and a partnership and love,' she explained.

‘Our jobs are high stress and high energy and constantly moving, so it’s really just the family part we’re on the same page about, which is amazing because I know that’s often quite tricky for couples.'?
