Max Branning is poised for a memorable Christmas – albeit for the wrong reasons – when his secret dealings lead to a fiery confrontation on EastEnders.

The shady character, played by Jake Wood, faces the inevitable wrath of Walford residents after his plan to bulldoze Albert Square and turn it into a lucrative property development is finally exposed.

Max teamed up with devious James Willmott-Brown – who is back on the Square some 30-years after his conviction for raping Kathy Beale – following his own, wrongful conviction for killing Lucy Beale, Kathy’s granddaughter.

But the businessman is rumbled in dramatic scenes to be aired this week, with furious neighbours Ian Beale, Mick Carter and Linda Carter rounding on him in the Queen Victoria.

Looking typically forlorn, Max lowers his eyes to the floor as some of the show’s best known characters turn on him.

A show insider told Inside Soap: ‘This isn’t just a typical case of Max copping off with someone he shouldn’t – people’s lives are at stake.

‘He has actively duped the community into signing away their homes and businesses. That’s not something they can just forgive and forget.’?

The new scenes come shortly after producers managed to film and make a timely reference to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's engagement.

Kathy then grabbed the phone from him, gasping: 'What! Harry and Meghan?'

The scene was filmed and inserted into the episode a few hours after Harry and Meghan confirmed they are set to wed in Spring 2018.?

It was clear that the team behind EastEnders couldn't contain their excitement over news that Harry will marry Suits star Meghan Markle next spring, after a year and a half of dating.?
