Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will have a wedding cake made of bananas when they tie the knot in May, it has been claimed.

Harry, 33, and Miss Markle are said to have chosen the fruit for their ceremonial showpiece because the Prince loves 'anything with banana'.

Suits star Miss Markle, 36, set tongues wagging when she posted a picture on Instagram of two bananas spooning, with the caption 'sleep tight xx', 13 months ago.

Many interpreted the cryptic post as a symbol of the high profile couple's long distance relationship.

Now it appears the fruit may have a further role to play in their romance.

The couple will marry at St George's Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle because it is a place 'close to the couple's hearts', it was revealed last week.

But after the ceremony, the wedding party and guests may end up tucking into more than just the traditional fruit bake.

'This will be the first royal wedding cake made from bananas', a source told the Telegraph.

Darren Grady, former royal chef to Prince Harry and the Duke of Cambridge when they were were children, told Hello! magazine the brothers 'loved banana flan, anything with banana really, banana ice cream.'

The Prince and Miss Markle's unconventional cake will follow the trend set by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at their wedding in 2011.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's?chocolate biscuit wedding cake, made by McVities from a ?Royal Family recipe?

The royal couple requested a chocolate biscuit creation along with their eight-tiered traditional centrepiece.

The cake was made by McVities, from a Royal Family recipe, and was specially requested by Prince William.

The Prince and Miss Markle have not given an exact date for their 'fun and joyful' wedding yet, but it is likely to be on TV.?

The couple have shunned a larger wedding at Westminster Abbey or St Paul's for a more intimate church service at St George's, where Harry's father Charles had a blessing after marrying Camilla in the nearby Guildhall in 2005.

The royal family will pay for the event, the music, the flowers and the reception.?
