Donald Trump denies asking Comey to stop investigating Flynn and blames 'Fake News covering another Comey lie!'

  • On Sunday, President Trump tweeted that he never asked fired FBI head James Comey to stop investigating his former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn
  • 'Just more Fake News covering another Comey lie!' Trump wrote on Twitter at 5:15 a.m.?
  • Comey testified before Congress in June that President Trump had pressured him to let the Flynn thing 'go' before firing him?
  • On Saturday, President Trump tweeted that he had fired Flynn because he lied to the vice president and the FBI
  • That statement could potentially open up the president to obstruction of justice charges, with a Trump lawyer later saying he had sloppily written the tweet?

Donald Trump branded claims he told former FBI director James Comey to stop investigating Michael Flynn 'fake news'.

'I never asked Comey to stop investigating Flynn,' Trump wrote in a tweet that came at 5:15 a.m. Sunday morning. 'Just more Fake News covering another Comey lie!'?

All weekend, the president has been tweeting about the Russia probe, which ensnared his former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, who pleaded guilty Friday of lying to the FBI over conversations he had with the Russian government during the presidential transition.?

Donald Trump complained Saturday that Michael Flynn was receiving more attention from the FBI for lying to them over the Russia probe than Hillary Clinton did for destroying emails

Flynn admitted to lying about communicating with Russian ambassador to the U.S.?Sergey Kislyak in December 2016.?

Critics say that violates the 1799 Logan Act, which forbids unauthorized Americans from representing the US government to foreign powers that are in dispute with the U.S.?

On Friday, CNN reported that it was Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law and close adviser, who directed Flynn to liaise with Russia.?

Trump potentially made the matter worse with a tweet he sent out Saturday, suggesting that he knew Flynn had lied to the FBI, causing him to fire him.

'I had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI. He has pled guilty to those lies,' Trump wrote. 'It is a shame because his actions during the transition were lawful. There was nothing to hide!'?

Two sources later told the Washington Post that the president's personal lawyer, John Dowd, had authored the tweet, which appeared on the @realDonaldTrump Twitter account. ??

The tweet raises questions about what Trump knew when?– and is problematic when linked up with Comey's congressional testimony, as the ex-FBI head wrote in memos later leaked to the press that he'd been pressured by the president to 'let this go.'??

'I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go. He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go,' Comey said the president urged him, according to testimony he prepared for his June appearance before the Senate Intelligence Committee.?

'I took it as a direction,' Comey said at the June 8 hearing. 'I mean, this is a president of the United States with me alone saying, "I hope this." I took it as, this is what he wants me to do. I didn't obey that, but that's the way I took it.' ?

Comey's May 9 firing prompted calls for the appointment of a special counsel, which Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein headed on May 18, announcing Comey's FBI predecessor Robert Mueller would do the job.?

So far Mueller's probe has caught up four Trump associates: the president's former Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort, Manafort's deputy Rick Gates, George Papadopoulos, a campaign foreign policy adviser who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russia, and Flynn. ?

Flynn is now cooperating with the Mueller probe. ?

In the defense of his advisers, Trump has often floated that they've been treated more harshly than Hillary Clinton, who was investigated by the FBI last year for her usage of a private email server to conduct government business. ??

'So General Flynn lies to the FBI and his life is destroyed, while Crooked Hillary Clinton, on that now famous FBI holiday "interrogation" with no swearing in and no recording, lies many times... and nothing happens to her?' Trump wrote Saturday night on Twitter.

'Rigged system, or just a double standard?'?

In a second tweet shortly after, Trump added: 'Many people in our Country are asking what the "Justice" Department is going to do about the fact that totally Crooked Hillary, AFTER receiving a subpoena from the United States Congress, deleted and "acid washed" 33,000 Emails? No justice!'???

He and his followers have long demanded that the police imprison Clinton for running her private email server, even turning 'Lock her up!' into an election chant.

Clinton deleted?31,830 emails that she deemed 'personal' three weeks after receiving a congressional subpoena.

She also submitted to an interview with Comey regarding the email server during which Comey did not make her swear an oath.?

In the interview she claimed not to have received classified emails, although classified material was later found on her homebrew server.?

Comey suggested that was because she was 'not technically sophisticated' enough to recognize them as such.?
