A puppy has been shot in the back with a nail gun, narrowly missing his spine.

Perth man Paul said he came home from work on Tuesday and found his Jack Russell/Pug Cross named Hank 'crying and shaking.'

'He was sort of crying, shaking and not moving, even when I put food in front of him which is not like him,' he told 6PR Radio.

'I've gone to pick him up and I've felt something funny... coming out of his side and it was about a centimetre's worth of nail hanging out of him.'

Paul rushed Hank to the vet where he was told the nail only missed the dog's spine by millimetres.

The vet also said Hank's injury was 'no accident'.

Paul said there is a construction site next to his house, but he had not found the culprit yet.

'It's just anger now really, the fact that someone's walking round that has the capacity to be shooting a small dog with a nail gun,' he said.

Though shaken from the incident, Paul said Hank should make a full recovery.

In a statement issued on Wednesday RSPCA WA confirmed it was investigating the incident.

'In Victoria Park, a Jack Russell Pug cross dog living next door to a construction site was allegedly shot with a nail gun,' the statement reads.

'The owner said his dog is lucky to be alive, as the 9cm nail narrowly missed its spine and lungs. The dog was treated by a vet and is recovering with its owner.

'The case is currently being investigated to ascertain if this was a deliberate act of cruelty or a work place accident.'?
