A yoga teacher has revealed her gruelling morning detox which she claims is the antidote to stress, poor digestion and mental health issues.

Emma Maidment, a yogi and health guru from Victoria, shared with Body + Soul the health detox she sticks to without fail - and it involves oil pulling, the bizarre act of tongue scraping and drinking a glass of warm water.

'I swear by it for digestion, lower stress levels, happiness and mental clarity. It might be the practices themselves, or the fact that I've set aside time for me instead of rushing around before starting the day,' Emma wrote.

The first step in the yoga connoisseur's morning routine before anything else is to scrape off all the toxins on her tongue.

Emma explains that a sticky substance called 'ama' builds on up tongues during the night and needs to be removed for overall health and wellbeing.?

According to the ancient medicinal beliefs of Ayurveda, the practice of tongue scraping?helps to 'stimulate the internal organs through energetic connections'.

'Start at the back of the tongue and scrape forwards seven to 14 times or until the tongue is clean. You’ll be surprised what comes off your tongue and just how different it is each day based on what you ate the day before,' Emma said.

Next, Emma follows the popular folk remedy of 'oil pulling' - which involves swishing a teaspoon of oil in the mouth like a mouthwash for five to 15 minutes.

It is said to detoxify the body and also promises to whiten teeth as oil can cut through plaque and remove toxins without disturbing the teeth or delicate gums.

After oil pulling Emma then recommends tongue scraping once more and rinsing out her mouth with warm water and brushing teeth with natural toothpaste.

The last step for detoxifying her body is to down a glass of warm water, which Emma boils and leaves to sit while she completes the first two steps.

'For me, I find that the warm water aids my body in elimination, and cleans things out,' she added.

And if the yoga instructor has another 10 minutes to spare, she endeavours to squeeze in a quick round of 'sun salutations' and a few moments of mediation.?
